Finally....THE MEET ARTICLE |
What a competition! The meet had its share of top level lifting as well as a host of newcomers. With all of the new lifters we had, it's safe to say we have our work cut out for us in trying to educate and bring everyone along. Organized powerlifting is quite a bit different (and tougher) than just lifting in the gym, which makes some of the lifts we seen even more impressive.
In the Missouri State 132 lb. division, Kevin Otte and John Hunn squared off for the third time, and for the third time the result was the same. After nearly outsquatting Hunn, and out benching him by a small margin, Otte was only behind by 10 kilos. But the deadlift is Otte's Achille's heel of the big three and is the only thing holding him back. Hunn ended up pulling a nice 374 lb. deadlift to widen his lead even further and win the 132 lb. State title by a margin of almost 100 lbs. Though they were unaware of it, these guys have a nice friendly rivalry going, making it a lot of fun to see two lifters come to the meet and compete with one another.
Rick Bertel won the 148's uncontested making 6 out of 9 lifts on the day, which included a smooth 402 lb. deadlift. He was just a few lifts away from eclipsing his total made in the 2001 Central USA meet last November. With a little help he will be setting pr's left and right.
