Results Posted!
The results are now posted. Forgive us for taking so long, we normally try to get
these up within 24 hours of the meet. In an effort to get another person trained in
coding the results, we hald off in posting them so fast so that Kurt Miller could get
his feet wet in working with the code. Kurt stepped up and did a great job in learning how to do this and will be a big help to me in the future.
We are glad to have his help and to also give him the opportunity to broaden his skills!
It's guys like this that make things easier on all of us. Also, special thanks on this event goes to:
Thelma Phillips, Angi Campbell, Sue Cissell, Jennie Bollinger, Tiffany Gaines,
Harold Gaines, Sr., Damon Phillips, David Gaines, Don Gaines, Jay Smith,
Gregory Gaines, Diamond and David Gaines, Leslie Gaines, Erica Simpson,
Deanna Gaines, Rob Campbell and Leo Furnace.
A great meet!
The 2003 edition of the Ozark meet has came and went. Harold Gaines and his crew did
a fine job for their first time out of the gates and produced a fun competition.
The paperwork is in the process of being mailed into the National Office and once that is done
Harold will pass the results along to Kurt Miller. Kurt is going to try his hand at
some web coding and enter the results for this one so it might be a few days before they are up.
I will post some commentaries on the meet here though.
This was the first time we split the Missouri State & Ozark meet. As bad as I hated to
break tradition, it was a change we had to make and I'm glad we did it. I don't have the
total number of individual lifter between the two meets, but I would guess it was more than
that combined Mo State/Ozark had last year.
I thought the judging was consistent and by the book. Of course there will always
be blown calls, no matter what sport or level. But it was tighter than it has been in the past.
Our goal here isn't to take lifts away, but rather run it by the book so everyone is on
the same page and equal ground. We can always use more refs. If you are interested e-mail me
and I will see about getting you a test. Big thanks to our referees who were George Heleine,
Maureen Post, Steve Cissell, Mike Cissell, & James Bell. Special thanks also goes out to Mike Overdeer,
who lended a hand with the drug testing and enabled us to get out sooner.
The facility was an old school that was bought by the Moolah Shriners. I thought the
gymnasium was laid out nice and looked very good. It was a little warm since the place didn't have A/C, but the
big fans did help. This type of place would be perfect for the fall or winter I would think. Next time around
the hospitality room would also work well as a seperate warmup area as well if the meet grew. Of course this is something we can revisit
later. I was impressed by the amount of detail Harold and his team put into the meet. They made it special in several ways.
The state flag of each competitor was printed and hung along the backdrop, while the Missouri State records
were printed on huge 11 x 17 posters. Along with that, Harold made it a point to introduce himself to
each lifter and welcome them to the comeptition. It's personal touches like this that make people want to come back and Team Gaines did
an excellent job doing that.
There was quite a bit of help on hand, and I'll probably miss some people but here goes...Big thanks to Missouri State
meet director Darrell Branson who came and offered a hand wherever needed. I know I don't have all of the names of the spotters and loaders,
but it is the hardest job of the meet. There were some scary attempts by Greg Chrun, and even when more experienced hands were brought in we still had
a had time catching the bar. When 500 lbs. falls, it falls fast! Thanks goes out to Pat Rankin, who gave the michrophone and speakers quite a workout.
Pat is Mr. Hardcore for anything that is good. You will not find a more positive person than him. Special note on Dawn Gaines....you are sharp at this stuff.
In my book you have equal billing next to your better hallf as meet director. This lady with the help of Sue Cissell, crunched numbers all day and wore out
some shoe leather. Very impressive! The staff running the overhead and shuffling cards did a great job considering this was their first time out. Once they got the hang of it,
the rythem got better and things ran better. It's not easy to be thrown into these positions.
The crowd of lifters on hand to watch the meet was one fo the better ones we've had. It was a who's who of St. Louis powerlifting.
The muscular guy with dark hair and specs helping Peyton Stone was none other than Jay Rosciglione, one of the best lifter's St. Louis has ever seen.
The big guy walking around in the hat, looking like one of the Sopranos family members was Ron Serra, who has been benching 500 lbs. forever.
King Louie himself, Jeff Lewis was also on hand. Jeff willingly dove in and helped spot in the squats. This guy wouldn't even take his $5 back when we tried to give his admission back, saying he was just glad to help out. We need more like him to make this work even better!
Raider mascot lookalike Jim Davis, was also there talking up the upcoming [Strongman Nationals] and did a good interview about the upcoming event. I am working very closely with Jim on this event and want to see as many USAPL lifters at this event as possible. Admission to the Friday night semi-finals is free and Saturday is only $10. Jim has raised nearly $100,000 over a four year period for seriously ill children, donating the proceeds to the Children's Miracle Network.
I had several lifters talk about the upcoming meets and there was a lot of indications that the interest level is up; more than ever. We've got a good shcedule of meets laid out that should accomodate everyone well.
The next meet will be September 13th when we all convene for the [2nd annual Meet in the Street]. Entries on this outdoor Benchmeet and Bikeshow are now posted. In October, we have the [Deadlift Nationals] in St. Louis, Mo.
This one will be a lot of fun as well. Three big pulls and it's over....start getting that back ready now. The 14th Annual Central USA PL & BP will be November 15th this year. Paperwork on this is still on the way but the date is set.
So we have a good schedule laid out that hopefully will allow everyone to meet down in Cape at the end of the year for one big blowout, gang fight of a powerlifting competition!
