Jennie Hollier

Snapshots of Jennie

Name: Jennie A. Hollier

Division: OPEN

Ht: 5’0"

Hometown: Lafayette, Louisiana. Yes, I’m a Cajun!

Profession: Bartender at a casual restaurant. I’m also doing some photo modeling on the side.

Family: One Day ?! Just kidding. I have an older sister (32), an older brother (29), my mom (54), and my dad (56).

Years training: 14

Years competing: 4. Ever since I knew there was a such thing as Powerlifting.

Why did you start lifting/competing: I like the burning feeling and the release of energy. I knew that I could succeed at it. I also like feeling of competition………never knowing what’s going to happen at a meet. If something good happens, then it’s really rewarding. If something bad happens, then I learn something from the experience.

Person you most look up to: Lifting Wise: Ashley Awalt and Christy Newman. My thoughts are, “if they can do it, I can do it”. That’s what motivates me. Ha, I also stole Christy’s arching approach. Hey, it works! You only learn from watching the best ?! Outside of Powerlifting, I look up to my dad. He’s well organized and he keeps me in the right direction. For guidance in training and technique, I look to Travis Werner… my coach.

Favorite foods: Ice Cream, Buffalo Wings, CHEESE, and Boiled Crawfish!!! Mmmmmmmmmmmm ?

Favorite foods for cheating: When I do have to make weight, I would say: Tic Tacs, an occasional plain animal cracker, gum, and when I really want to be rebellious… about 6 sips of water!! Other than that, I don’t really have a diet plan. I just make sure I have carbs, protein, and my multi-vitamin everyday.

The drink you absolutely love: Pink Lemonade (with REAL sugar!). Alcoholic beverage? It depends on the mood I’m in. If I’m on a mission, shots are always fun. If I’m in the sipping mood, red wine or beer. I like either strong or sour drinks. Anything too sweet, such as an Amaretto Sour, will make me sick.

Advice for beginners: Focus on your form, then worry about how much weight to put on the bar. Set goals that are reachable, then keep updating them as you accomplish them. Don’t get discouraged by your competitor’s big numbers. Equipment has a lot to do with those numbers. If you just train right and wear the right equipment, you would be surprised at how well you’ll do. Also, don’t miss ANY workouts!!! Every workout makes you that much closer to accomplishing a goal.

Tell us the things that nobody would EVER guess about you: No one would EVER guess that I was a Powerlifter. I get that ALL the time!! No one would ever guess that I would be an Anatamy Chart on the walls of doctor’s offices and classrooms! No really, it’ll be out in about a year. I get a percentage of the sales on the charts that are sold of me, so all you doctors and teachers buy the chart of the short girl (There’s short, medium, and tall)! ? I’m a little nervous and self-conscious about it, but I’m sure I’ll get over it eventually.

What kind of collections do you own: I used to collect Pearl Jam C.D.s, but I think I grew out of that. Now I collect Powerlifting T-shirts from the meets that I compete in.

Tell us the most recent impulsive thing you've done? I bought a video camera. I don’t regret it either. Usually you feel guilty about those kind of things, but I’m glad I got it.

Give us some predictions on what to expect at the 2005 Benchpress Nationals: GOOD LORD!! Now that I’ve switched to the new shirts, I can’t predict my meets anymore. I’ll bench a nice American Record or I’ll bomb out like I did at Worlds. I start training in my shirt again on February 27, so I’ll have time to find the groove. As of now, I don’t know what’s going to happen.

Final thoughts (On anything): I love this sport. I love the people in it. And I look forward to every meet I compete in. I’m constantly meeting new people with the same interests. It’s just great!
