Full bio for Katie
Best Lifts:
" 402 squat; 248 bench; 424 deadlift; "

Sports prior to powerlifting:
" Swimming, Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Shot Put and Discus, some Wrestling." (Katie has been powerlifting since 1996)

Favorite foods:
" Is coffee a food? I'm pretty cranky before I start drinking my coffee :) Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day and I can eat it any time of day; gotta love the Longhorn Grill'ins where we cook up beef with a side of chicken; Peanut Butter; and the Longhorn PLing staple: Milk. I also try to eat fruits and vegetables whenever possible because Texas has great fresh produce...and I just plain like it. Fruit in the summertime is the best! "

Favorite foods if not dieting:
" Mexican food!!! There’s nothing like Kerbey Queso after those long nights out on the town. Just about anything dairy...ice cream and milk shakes (Sonic, baby) especially. Chocolate (mmmmmmm!) Reeses Peanutbutter Cups and Milky Ways are the best. "

Hobbies and interests outside of powerlifting:
" Going out with friends and keeping up with Longhorn Sports. It’s hard to find much spare time, but I’m just dieing to find a dance partner so I can learn. I’m so uncoordinated it’s not even funny. Hopefully this fall I’ll learn a step or two. "

If given an afternoon or entire evening to yourself, you would most likely do what:
" Anyone who knows me will guess that afternoons mean nap time. The evenings depend on my mood….I’m either a social butterfly and want to go out with friends or a total recluse. When by myself, pampering sessions are usually what I crave…a pedicure, warm bubble bath, music, followed by a DVD or TV. "

Do you collect anything?
" I have a couple of embarrassing collections from my childhood that I keep boxed up now so company doesn’t make fun of me lol I also help my Mom with her postcard collection. My grandfather was in the Air Force and always sent her postcards from around the world since she was a small child. I help her add to the collection by bringing back a couple from my travels. "

Last book you read:
" Going out to buy Clinton’s and Lance’s Autobiographies. "

Favorite musical artists:
" Red Hot Chile Peppers, Black Crows, just about any kind of rock. But my mood changes, and my tastes varies with it. Usually in the car it’s Hip Hop lol but those moments when I need to relax I’ll turn it to country (gasp) or lighter rock/pop. "

If stranded on an island, what book/magazine, cd, food & drink would you want?
" What, no internet???? Lots of fresh fish or beef that I can grill up with fruit that I find on the island, mixed CD of soothing tropical tunes, a subscription to Cosmo, and some kick a@@ Margaritas. "

People would never guess this about you:
" My mom worked as a grip on movies and commercials, so when I was younger I got to hang around the sets a lot. I got to meet some interesting people (Richard Linkletter, Mathew McCaunahey, Willie Nelson, to name a few). People always think the movies are so glamorous, but it’s really kinda boring cause they shoot the same scene over and over again. I’ve even gotten the chance to work on a couple of movies when I was a teenager. For example, I was an extra in a movie Usher shot a few years ago lol "

They would also never guess:
" I’ll graduate from UT with a 3.95 GPA "

If queen for a day you would do what differently:
" Lower the dang gas prices! Declare it "National Powerlifting Day", and go shopping while wearing the crown jewels. "

Most impressive feat of strength you have ever seen:
" Wow, hard to pinpoint just one…or even just a few. Seeing Ed Coan squat 1003 in Corpus was pretty impressive. Also, I got to see Jill Mills at some of her first pling and strongwoman competitions. I’m impressed every time I see Lizzy get on the platform. She’s had some tough breaks, but seeing her potential at this last Women’s Worlds was increadable. Also, I think I have to agree with everyone that Sider’s performance at the 2004 Men’s Nationals, where he beat Kaz’s total with ease, was a spectacle not to be forgotten. The Miller girls coming up have great potential and are putting up numbers (with great form) that surpass their teen and junior counterparts. "

Who has had the most impact on your career:
" I have been privileged enough to have a lot of special people help me along the way and there are far too many to mention. That’s one of the things that I have always loved about the sport….the best are not inaccessible and are willing to help an up and coming lifter. First and fore most, I have to mention my Dad. He was there with me from the beginning and spent so many hours in the gym, putting together routines, raising funds for travel, and being my support at meets. Out of 8 years of lifting, I can count on one hand the number of meets he has missed….and keep in mind that I lifted in TWHSPA where there is a meet every weekend from January through March. Next, I have to mention my mom. She has been my biggest supporter and has made the resources available for me to pursue lifting. Being from Texas, I can’t go on in this section without mentioning Johnny Graham. He does so much for this organization at every level, but the work he does at the grassroots level is irreplaceable. I have known him since I was a high school lifter and he always had a word of advice, encouragement for my lifting, or just a joke to make me laugh. Of recent, I have to say thanks to Jon Magendie. As I have matured as a lifter and learned to be more independent, he has given me coaching advice from afar and we have found a system that works very well for me. Also, a big thanks to Pete Alanez and Titan Support Systems. They have been sponsoring me since I was 17 and I would not have been able to get as far as I have without their great powerlifting gear. "

What lifter(s) do you really look up to:
" My Mom.although she was not a powerlifter per se at the time that I began lifting, she was the person who I first aspired to out lift when I began training. She was a great motivation. Liz Willet..She has not even gotten close to her full potential and has a heart of gold. She will be recognized as the strongest drug free woman in the world very soon. Sioux-z Hartwig a lifter that other ladies should look up to. She worked so hard all those years and finally won the Gold at IPF Worlds in 2003. I met her at my first Women’s Nationals and since then she always has a hug, great big smile, and kind words for everyone. Bettina Altizer. What can I say, she has brains, brawn, and is a leader within the organization. Brad Gillingham. There is a reason why he won the Brother Bennett Award this year. He’s a great lifter, has a kind heart, and has really shown us how to be a Champion. "

Give us your quotes for the upcoming Women's Nationals in St. Louis:
" It’s about time to go 9 for 9, baby! "

The defining moment that made you realize you wanted to compete:
" My freshman year in high school. The coach told me that they weren’t going to have a women’s team that year and that I would have to prove myself before he would allow me on the team. I was so upset because I knew that I had more knowledge, more talent, and a higher work ethic than any of my male counterparts. I told him right there that I would be able to place at TWHSPA State with the little training I had done thus far, and that he would be loosing out as a coach if he did not let me compete. He let me lift after he found out I could out squat all the guys on our freshman football team ;) "
