Altizer, Perron & Ferrel repeat as champs!
The Nationals were kicked off Saturday with some fine lifting females. Bettina Atlizer was able to knock off an impressive 259 lb., double bodyweight lift weighing less than 132. The lift won her class putting her in front of runner up Jennifer Thompson, who only made her 253 lb. opener. At 165 lbs, Sandra Perron from West St. Paul, MN was another repeat champion. Perron netted 2 out of 3, ending with a fine 242 lb. lift. In the unlimited category, Deb Ferrell, traveled all the way from Alaska to defend her crown, and what a performance it was. Deb was perfect on the day, ending with a superb 363 lb. lift to edge out Altizer for best lifter in the open class.

242's go down to final lifts! |
One of our more competitive clases on Sunday, the 242's mixed it up pretty good. We had quite a fight for the 242 lb. braggin' rights between Dwayne Meeks, Collin Rhodes, Dave Doan & last year's champ, Raoul Donati. With the highest opener of the class, Meeks struggled to get the 540 lb. opener he chose. Doan also missed, opening at 534 lbs. Rhodes & Donati played it safe opening a bit lighter with each making thier first lifts. In round two, Meeks still failed to make the 540 lb. lift he missed in round 1. Rhodes took the same weight and was successful; while Doan and Donati both made 545 lbs. On to third attempts. With Meeks still unable to get a lift on his first two lifts, he chose to stay at 540 lbs. and pulled through under the gun to stay in the meet. Rhodes made the jump to 551 lbs, as did Donati and Doan. As the ball bounced, all three were close to 551 lbs. but all missed it. When it was over, Meeks and Rhodes had tied at 540 lbs, and actually had to be re-weighed since they weighed exactly the same Sunday morning. Meeks was lighter and took third place over Collin "Pooh Bear" Rhodes. First and second was also decided on a bodyweight decision between Doan and Donati. With Donati being a bit heavier Doan took top honors over last year's champion from Osceola, Indiana. As tight as this class was, any one of the top four or five would be great selections for the world team. All were well within range of each other. |

M & M seminar goes well! |
On Saturday evening spectators were treated to a top notch BP seminar from two of the top USAPL benchers. Larry "Dr. Benchpress" Miller & Joe McCauliffe gave a large crowd inside info on several different aspects of the lift. Among the topics discussed by Miller, were a detailed explaination of training with rubber bands along with tips on how to properly fit your BP shirt. The high strung McCauliffe gave listeners pointers on setting up a program from top to bottom as well as info on using the rubberbands. Appearing with them was Dick Hartzle, originator of the rubberband training system. Hartzle gave several demonstrations on using the bands for both strength and flexilbility. |
