Lance Bargatze |
|
Lance is another one of our referees that has spent quite a bit of time around a platform. A Master lifter, he owns a handful of state records in his weight and age group. A longtime training partner of Sam Greco, he's responsible for keeping Sam fired up and motivated. Lance's famous line? "Hey, nobody ever said it was gonna be easy." With that being true, Lance makes his work on the platform and in the judges chair look all to easy! Lance was also a past Leroy award winner.

|
James Bell has been lifting in meets since the mid 1980's. An experienced lifter, he has spent much time over the years helping kids with their lifting and taking them to meets. Along with lifting in the meets, he has also done quite a bit of spotting and loading. Not only has he spent time coaching powerlifting, Jim has also spent years coaching girls softball and was awarded the 2000 Lee Marsh award winner for his work in powerlifting.

For over to 2 decades Missouri powerlifters went to meets promoted by Dr. Mike Cissell. In the early days he was a staunch supporter of the USPF, and had even judged the likes of Dr. Squat Fred Hatfield & other well known lifters, but changed in the mid to late 80's, in favor of the ADFPA. Having ran local meets for a few years, he decided to throw his hat in the ring and run some of his own National meets. The list is a long one and includes: USPF Teenage Nationals (Boys & Girls); 1986 National Masters; 1988 ADFPA Mens & Master Nationals; 1990 ADFPA Teenage Nationals; 1991 ADFPA Benchpress & Mens Nationals; 1992 ADFPA High School & Master Nationals; 1993 ADFPA Lifetimes; 1993 WDFPF Master World Championships; 1994 ADFPA Teenage Nationals; 1995 ADFPA Womens & Deadlift Nationals; 1995 WDFPF World Benchpress Championships; 1996 ADFPA Mens, Benchpress & Masters Nationals; 1997 ADFPA Teenage & Jr. Nationals; 1998 USAPL Lifetimes; 1999 USAPL Mens Nationals, & 2000 USAPL Benchpress Nationals.
Serving as the Missouri State chairman, Mike was also responsable for organizing the meets and also keeping records of all the lifts. Were it not for him, you wouldn't even be reading this page, since he was behind starting it in 1999. A dentist by trade, his office is located in Lake St. Louis, Mo. Along with that, he and his family ran Lakeside Fitness which was next to his dental office overlooking beautiful Lake St. Louis.
For hobbies (when his tight schedule permits) you'll find him hunting. At least once every year or two, he and son Steve go on a hunting expedition to Alaska, hunting Elk, Moose & Caribou. Besides hunting, they've also been known to throw a party or two.

If there was ever someone you wanted to engineer a project, Steve Cissell would be the guy. Just give him the exact specs, and he'd be able to come up with several ways to do it. The right hand man of his father Mike, Steve has done it all. From putting togethor the meet sight, including building the stages and setting things up; to making the awards by hand, if it has his seal on it, it's done right. What began as an experiment in the boathouse has turned into a profitable hobbie. His woodworking abilities are amazing! Having seen items that range from cabinets, to coffee tables, to picture frames, to huge conference tables, his work is something to see! When he's not putting these talents to use on regular items, he builds excellent awards. Instead of getting a plaque made of pressed wood and veneer, Steve's are thick plaques made of multiple kinds of wood, in unique patterns, giving the lifter a heavy duty award! Besides plaques, he has created outstanding specialty awards. They've ranged from off the wall geometric figures, to exact replicas of a wooden barbell on a huge display. At one meet he even created replicas of the Gateway Arch, that stood at least 18 inches tall! Check out some of his work here.
A lifter himself, Steve has pretty much put his lifting career on the backburner for now in favor of work. A construction worker by trade, he works in the winter to get his weight back up, only to fight the summer heat & weight loss every year. As a teenager though, he was some lifter. A two-time runner up at the Teenage Nationals (1986 & 1987), as well as a fourth place finish in 1989, he was a veteran before the age many lifters even start.

As Missouri Chairman, Rick's job is to plan the competitions, promote them and oversee them. He has been a powerlifter since early 1986, and he had a nice career as a teenage lifter, finishing 4th in the 1989 Teenage Nationals. Nowadays he's a web develper for Enterprise Rent-A-Car during the day, and a husband/father at night. Fowler is also a staff member at the YMCA in Granite City and is responsible for running the asylum of powerlifters that train there.
Rick's background in almost 20 years of powerlifting as the understudy of Dr. Mike Cissell includes helping at meets, judging, lifting, promotion, web developement, meet logos, demonstrations at schools and writing powerlifting related articles. When not working on powerlifting related issues, he spends time working on other projects which include the sport of Strongman as well as web development, custom logos and graphics.
Fowler's hobbies include playing with his kids, Jacob and Olivia as much as possible; drawing, sculpting, painting, watching movies, drinking strong coffee, cooking, and a whloe lot of barbq.

Dawn is the part of the Gaines Team that actually knows what is going on and is really responsable for running things. She has filled in at the meets in nearly every capacity and doesn't miss a beat. As a super-organizer she plays a major part in the behind the scenes details on many projects. She could be labeled as meet director with the amount she pitches in.

| Harold Gaines |
|
Harold brings to the table some hard to find soft skills in dealing with people. He has an unmatched array of talents when it comes to promoting and staging events. With quite a bit of experience in sound equipment and lighting, he has produced some very big events. Spring of 2004 will be his biggest as he will oversee the entire St. Louis Fitness Festival at the America's Center in downtown St. Louis.

The little guppy of the Gaines clan, Leslie is tenacious! She can usually be found at the front door selling shirts and taking admission. An active member of the team, she can be found from the beginning of setup to the very end. Ok,.... so she doesn't have a choice, but she does help us out a lot and we appreciate all of her help!

Judy has had the unique perspective of being Sam Greco's better helf. As the wfie of a powerlifter, she has seen as many powerlifting competitions as anyone. Judy took her state referee's test and stepped in with her valuable experience.

|
An excellent lifter, Sam has been around the game longer than most. Simply put, he is a powerlifting dinosaur that refuses to go away. Sam has won local titles, National titles, and even a WDFPF World title. He is an unbelievable inspiration and is forever motivated to keep doing better. Through the years he has seen more big name lifters and big meets than anyone. His history goes back to the late 1970's when the sport had just one organization and was super competitive.

| George Heleine |
|
George is the rare powerlifter that also competes in bodybuilding competitions. From Rolla, Mo, George relies on his compact frame to generate an overabundance of power. He has battled some injuries, but when lifting he is technically sound and knows how it is done. George has filled in just about every role at one time or another and is a state referee.

|
As a National Referee, Bruce Levine is a sharp cookie that we are glad to have aboard. He has been around since the early 1990's and has lifted in his share of competitions. When not judging at the meets, Bruce uses his good natured peronality as a pastor.

| Kurt Miller |
|
Kurt is one of our newest members to the team and has gained quite a bit of experience in a short amount of time. A bright young guy, he is good with the numbers and has the energy needed to consistently get things done. With his youth and intelligence, look for Kurt to play a larger role in the future.

| Maureen Post |
|
Maureen has been a competitive lifter sine 1992 when she entered her first meet. After several years of training and getting stronger, she has lifted in a handful of Womens and Benchpress Nationals. In 2001 & 2002, she was a member of the U.S. National Benchpress Team that competed in the IPF World Masters Benchpress Championships. The highlight of her career was at the 2002 Worlds, where Maureen captured a bronze medal. Locally, if not lifting, she adds quite a bit of punch to the meet staff. Always willing to help, she not only judges but also does a great job processing numbers for the meet and has even ran a few competitions!

|
Pat Rankin, simply put, is one unique fellow. A strong supporter of drug tested events, he has been behind everything the Missouri USAPL has done. Through the years Pat has spotted, helped setup, promoted, and encouraged the lifters. His best asset though, is his ability to entertain and motivate people, particularly while announcing. He has a knack for one liners and should be on a radio station somewhere. We are glad to have Pat Rankin as an aid to the Missouri USAPL.

These two identical twins have done quite a bit of behind the scenes work at the meets. Each are super when it comes to numbers and helping to facilitate each lifters information after weigh-ins. Along with that, they also are willing to step in at the overhead projector to expedite next attempts when needed. Though you wouldn't know it by the help they give, each are still just in high school and are extremely strong for having such low bodyweights. As a sidenote, these too were also expert taco fryers at a local bar in Granite City, and helped at various Taco fund raisers. Nowadays they can be found working at various QuikTrips in the Metro-East.

| Dana Rosenzweig |

Dana has been invloved with powerlifting for a long, long time. Recently he passed his State Referee exam and did an excellent job at the Ozark competition. A competitior since the 1970's, Dana has endured like very few have. As a benchpress specialist, this Master benchpresser routinely goes way over 400 at 181 & 198! After competing in a handful of National Benchpress Championships, Dana was seelcted to the 2002 U.S. National Benchpress Team and competed in the IPF World Masters Benchpress Championships for that year. In 2004 he was selected to the same team and wil son travel to Slovakia for the World Championships. A valuable asset at the overhead projector, Dana is great at expediting and handling the numbers!

Bennie is a state referee that gained his experience while he was a member at Mike Cissell's Lakeside Fitness. After years of competing and judging, his involvement lately has been limited to only refereeing. Ben works as a manager for a lumber yard and keeps himself very busy.
