Heritage Festival Strongest Man

Huge Success!

The 2009 edition of the Heritage Festival Strongest Man was a great success and went off without a hitch. Held in Granite City, IL the festival celebrates the rich Eastern European heritage the helped to found the neighborhood.

15 athletes in all signed up and made the event what it was. Of course without help, the meets would not run as smooth as they do. Refereeing today were Dr. Mike Cissell and Brady Stewart. Brady even took on the job of figuring the points based on the competitors finish, then putting them in order based on the prior event. This was a very big help to me and was much appreciated.

Be sure to check out the 62 photos from the event that I have posted. Special thanks goes out to Jessi Campbell for taking such nice photos!

Shaun Bales also made the trip and helped with registration while I was putting the finishing touches on setup. Scott Baquet was another of the Belleville Weightlifting Club who was lending a hand all day

Thanks to Ben Cuvar and Tom Pinkerton who helped move equipment and were in on returning stuff to the Y while the next event was being setup. You guys took hours off of me getting out of there.

Angie and Jessi Campbell...thank you for coming! Angie gave a hand with the music and took care of one small competitor injury. Jessi took gobs and gobs of photos for a class she is taking. She might very well be the area's next great photographer.

Thanks also goes to Jim Bell. Jim chipped in where ever he was needed and even flipped the 500 lb. tire...Easily. Very impressive Jim!

The numbers will be posted when I can get a minute to catch my breath, but here is just a brief summary of our board members.

Jason Koogler gave up almost 50 lbs. in the Mens LW class but was just a point and a half out of placing 3rd out of 5! The highlight of the day was him jumping up on a tire, stripping his shirt off of his battle scarred, 150 lb. body, and posing for the crowd.

Matt Shamburg just couldn't quite overtake Shane Hopkins and the obvious strength and weight advantage. Gang, Shane is getting really STRONG! Matt however did win the Tire Medley by a slim margin of 1.12 seconds. Competitors were required to flip tired weighing 300, 400, 500 600 & 700 lbs., each jut once for the fastest time.

Dillon Horn won the Teen MW class over Logan Zirkelbach and was clearly a level above. Logan however showed a whole lot of strength when he was able to win the stone over the rope. This kid has a great future ahead of him.

Jessica Borelli opted out of the contest at the last minute due to the Rivers Edge Powerlifting event coming up, but she did participate in the truck pull. Jessica pulled the truck & 16 foot trailer 50 feet and it was quite impressive!

Thanks again to all who came out and enjoyed a nice time.
