10. Seek out a qualified coach their experience , knowledge and support will be invaluable
9. Learn all the technical & equipment rules...learn ALL the rules inside & out
8. Set realistic goals incremental gains will keep you motivated through training. If you aim too high, too fast, you are asking for trouble.
7. Be willing to try new things.....this is important in the off-season for continued improvement and training variety.
6. Attend National meets...if you qualified LIFT; if your not, go anyway. Watching the best can help your lifting as well.
5. Technique, Technique, Technique...this applies to every lifter at any level. But beginners should have one day where all three lifts are performed with minimal weights to train the movements motor patterns.
4. Use gear to the best of your ability....be willing to experiment what works for you and what does not. Better yet, learn how to sew so you can alter suits & shirts yourself.
3. Help coach others, you may find out much more that you think about your own lifting
2. Complete the package physical prep, mental, diet & rest....miss one part of the equation and it can inhibit your continued improvement
And, the number 1 powerlifting tip from Greg Simmons...
1. Come meet day, you should be well prepared so try and relax and turn it on as you approach the bar!

Rick Fowler's Top Ten list of Tips that make you a powerlifter!
As a powerlifter/web developer, USAPLNationals.com is finally glad to pin this guy down for 30 seconds to get his Top Ten list. Though it's not the most conventional list, the same can be said for it's writer. Chances are if you've read something on the site that was a bunch of mindless babble (much like this Top Ten list), well guess what, it was probably one of Fowler's articles. He has come up with a different sort of list, a list for lifters to use when away from the gym, that they can carry with them, that will allow them to work daily towards being a true, hardcore, born again powerlifter. His interests include biscuits and gravy, the smell of bacon cooking when waking up in the morning, strong coffee and plenty of it, making homemade pizza and pasta noodles, going overboard on anything and everything, his collection of Powerlifting USA's that go back to 1978, remaining deadset 100% against the use of steroids, and the enjoyment of blowing peoples minds with the gains a slightly neurotic person can get if applying themselves religiously for 15 years. His only bit of advice to naysayers and the ignorant.."For those without legs who say they don't know....just one secret here, YOU GOTTA SQUAT LOW!" And now, onto the List!
10. Yard work? The day before a heavy workout? NOT A CHANCE!
9. Getting him to do ANY work the day before a heavy workout won't happen..(This one came from Rick's wife, Jennifer)
8. Pork...the ONLY white meat
7. Be careful who you ask "Do you want to see pictures of my meet?" This could be taken the wrong way.
6. "The big three" in our history books are guys by the names of Pacifico, Bridges and Coan...Not some dusty characters from the 1940's
5. When introducing people to your freinds at a party, you ALWAYS include a number after their name...."Fowler, 220, nice to meet you...".
4. Instead of peer pressure to drink beer, Freinds get harrased and belittled when they throw up from being unable to drink a quart of milk in less than 15 minutes (This is especially true while driving to Chicago).
3. Entire family vacation photo album are pictures of sweaty men and women taken in St. Louis, Chicago, Cleveland, Ft. Hood, TX and Lincoln, NE..
2. Cocain? Heroin? Haa. Give me a blank check at the meat market or grocery store, and I'll show you what REAL addictive behavior is all about!
And, the number 1 tip from Rick Fowler that you might be a powerlifter....
1. During meetings at work with managers and top executives, constantly point out what the numbers would really be as you multiply them in your head by 2.2!
